Zepbound vs Wegovy for Sleep Apnea and Heart Health in Houston, TX

Zepbound (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are both once-weekly injections approved for chronic weight management. Beyond weight, each label includes an additional approved use that can matter if you also live with sleep apnea or heart disease. This page explains those differences in plain language. It does not say one medicine is better than the other, because the right choice depends on your full health picture.

What each label adds

  • Zepbound: in addition to chronic weight management, it is approved for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity.
  • Wegovy: in addition to chronic weight management, it is approved to lower the risk of major cardiovascular events (such as heart attack or stroke) in adults with established cardiovascular disease and either obesity or overweight.

Why this matters in a decision

If you have been told you have sleep apnea, or you have established heart or blood vessel disease, tell your physician early. Those details can shape which medicine is considered first. If you do not have either condition, they may matter less, and other factors such as dosing schedule, side effects, cost and availability come to the front.

Important: weight medicine does not replace your other care

If you have sleep apnea, keep using the treatment your sleep physician prescribes unless they tell you otherwise. If you have heart disease, stay in touch with your cardiology team and take your heart medicines as directed. Your TeleSlim Clinic physician can coordinate with what you already take.

Shared safety information

Like other GLP-1 medicines, these carry a boxed warning about the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents. They should not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or by anyone allergic to the medicine. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and stomach pain. Serious risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney problems from dehydration and allergic reactions. They are not for use in pregnancy.

Zepbound may also reduce the effectiveness of oral birth control pills. Read more on our Zepbound in Houston and Wegovy in Houston pages.

Questions from Houston patients

I have sleep apnea. Will Zepbound replace my CPAP?

Do not stop any prescribed sleep apnea treatment without talking to your physician.

I have had a heart attack or stroke. Which should I take?

That is a decision for you, your physician and often your cardiologist. A video visit is a starting point for that conversation, and not everyone qualifies for either medicine.

Can I get either one by video visit in Houston?

If a Texas-licensed physician determines a medicine is appropriate after your video evaluation, the prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose.

Cost and how to get started

TeleSlim Clinic visits are self-pay: $99 for the first video consultation and $99 per month for physician follow-up, with lower per-month rates on 3-month, 6-month and annual plans (see our cost guide for Houston). The medication is a separate cost paid at the pharmacy or through manufacturer programs. Cash prices for weight-loss medications typically run about $150 to $450 per month depending on the medicine and dose, and they change over time, so ask your pharmacy for the current price. We provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer, but reimbursement is not guaranteed (see insurance and weight loss medication in Houston).

TeleSlim Clinic does not dispense medication, and we do not offer compounded GLP-1 medications. If your physician prescribes a medicine, the prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose. Visits are by video with Dr. Diala Alatassi, MD, DABIM, DABOM, FACP, who is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine and licensed to practice in Texas. TeleSlim Clinic serves adults 18 and older.

Book your $99 video visit to talk through your options with a Texas-licensed physician.
