Weight Loss Medication vs Bariatric Surgery in Houston, TX

Prescription medication and bariatric surgery are both established treatments for obesity, and they suit different people at different times. This page gives a balanced overview. TeleSlim Clinic provides medical weight management by video and does not perform surgery. We include this comparison because many Houston patients ask which route to consider.

How they differ

  • What it is: medication is taken regularly under physician supervision; surgery changes the digestive system through an operation.
  • Commitment: medication is ongoing and adjusted at follow-ups. Surgery is a one-time procedure followed by lifelong dietary changes, vitamins and monitoring.
  • Risks: medicines have side effects and safety warnings, such as nausea or, rarely, pancreatitis. Surgery carries operative and long-term risks, including complications and nutritional deficiencies.
  • Eligibility: medicines are generally for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition. Surgical eligibility follows medical guidelines and insurer rules and is assessed by a surgeon and surgical team.
  • Reversibility: stopping medication stops its effects; surgery is not easily reversed.
  • Cost and coverage: surgery is more often covered by insurance than weight-loss medication, subject to plan requirements. Medication costs are ongoing. TeleSlim Clinic visits are self-pay.

Who may want to start with medication

People who prefer a non-surgical approach, who are not interested in or not yet eligible for surgery, or who want to try medical treatment first may begin with medication. Some people also use medication before or after surgery under their care team's direction.

When to ask about surgery

If you have a higher BMI, serious weight-related health conditions or have not reached your goals with other treatment, ask your physician whether a surgical consultation makes sense. That evaluation happens with a surgeon in person.

Questions from Houston patients

Can I take weight loss medication and still consider surgery later?

Yes. Many people treat obesity in stages. Tell your physician about your interest in surgery.

Which one works better?

It depends on the person and the goal. Your physician reviews your history before suggesting a path. Individual results vary.

Do you offer surgery?

No. TeleSlim Clinic provides video-based medical weight management with FDA-approved medications when appropriate.

Cost and how to get started

TeleSlim Clinic visits are self-pay: $99 for the first video consultation and $99 per month for physician follow-up, with lower per-month rates on 3-month, 6-month and annual plans (see our cost guide for Houston). The medication is a separate cost paid at the pharmacy or through manufacturer programs. Cash prices for weight-loss medications typically run about $150 to $450 per month depending on the medicine and dose, and they change over time, so ask your pharmacy for the current price. We provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer, but reimbursement is not guaranteed (see insurance and weight loss medication in Houston).

TeleSlim Clinic does not dispense medication, and we do not offer compounded GLP-1 medications. If your physician prescribes a medicine, the prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose. Visits are by video with Dr. Diala Alatassi, MD, DABIM, DABOM, FACP, who is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine and licensed to practice in Texas. TeleSlim Clinic serves adults 18 and older.

Book your $99 video visit to talk through your options with a Texas-licensed physician.
