Phentermine vs Qsymia in Houston, TX | How They Differ | TeleSlim Clinic
Phentermine vs Qsymia in Houston, TX: Two Appetite-Suppressing Options Compared
Phentermine and Qsymia are older-style prescription weight-loss medicines that reduce appetite. Both contain phentermine, and both are Schedule IV controlled substances, but they are different products with different labels. They are not GLP-1 medicines. Here is how they compare, so you can have an informed conversation with a physician.
At a glance
- Phentermine (for example Adipex-P or Lomaira): a tablet or capsule taken once daily or in divided doses. The label describes short-term use, a few weeks, along with a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity. See our phentermine in Houston page.
- Qsymia: a once-daily capsule that combines phentermine with topiramate extended-release. See our Qsymia in Houston page.
Points to weigh
- Heart rate and blood pressure: phentermine can raise both. It is not for people with a history of heart or blood vessel disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid, glaucoma or a history of drug misuse, or within 14 days of an MAO inhibitor.
- Pregnancy: neither is for use in pregnancy, and Qsymia in particular can cause birth defects, so your physician will talk with you about pregnancy planning and contraception.
- Misuse potential: both are controlled substances with potential for misuse and dependence.
- Side effects: phentermine commonly causes dry mouth, trouble sleeping, constipation, dizziness and restlessness. Because Qsymia includes topiramate, other side effects can occur, and your physician reviews them with you.
Telemedicine rules
Under the federal telemedicine rules currently in effect, a DEA-registered, Texas-licensed physician can prescribe Schedule IV medicines after a video evaluation, without a prior in-person visit. Texas law also applies, and requirements can change. Dr. Alatassi holds a Texas DEA registration. Prescribing may include checking the state prescription monitoring program. Not everyone is a candidate.
Questions from Houston patients
Can I take both phentermine and Qsymia?
No. Qsymia already contains phentermine. Do not combine weight-loss products unless your physician directs it.
Is one a better long-term choice?
The phentermine label describes short-term use. Your physician sets the plan and reviews it at monthly follow-ups.
How do these compare with GLP-1 medicines?
They work differently. See our guide to weight loss medications in Houston.
Cost and how to get started
TeleSlim Clinic visits are self-pay: $99 for the first video consultation and $99 per month for physician follow-up, with lower per-month rates on 3-month, 6-month and annual plans (see our cost guide for Houston). The medication is a separate cost paid at the pharmacy or through manufacturer programs. Cash prices for weight-loss medications typically run about $150 to $450 per month depending on the medicine and dose, and they change over time, so ask your pharmacy for the current price. We provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer, but reimbursement is not guaranteed (see insurance and weight loss medication in Houston).
TeleSlim Clinic does not dispense medication, and we do not offer compounded GLP-1 medications. If your physician prescribes a medicine, the prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose. Visits are by video with Dr. Diala Alatassi, MD, DABIM, DABOM, FACP, who is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine and licensed to practice in Texas. TeleSlim Clinic serves adults 18 and older.
Book your $99 video visit to talk through your options with a Texas-licensed physician.
