Thinking about stopping semaglutide? Research shows weight regain is common after stopping, and planning ahead with your provider may help. Here is what Houston patients should know.
Obesity is a chronic, relapsing condition, and for many people the medication is part of long-term care. Studies suggest that stopping semaglutide often leads to regaining some of the lost weight.
What research shows
In the STEP 1 extension study, adults who stopped semaglutide 2.4 mg and the accompanying lifestyle program after 68 weeks regained about two-thirds of their prior weight loss within a year on average (Wilding et al., Diabetes Obes Metab 2022). Individual experiences vary, and this does not predict what will happen for you.
What else can change
- Appetite: hunger and cravings may return as the medication leaves your system.
- Blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol: improvements seen with weight loss may partly reverse if weight returns.
- Side effects: GI symptoms usually ease after stopping.
Reasons people stop
Common reasons include side effects, cost, insurance changes, pregnancy planning, reaching a goal, or medication shortages. Whatever the reason, it helps to talk with your provider before making a change.
Planning a safer transition
- Ask about tapering or maintenance: your provider may discuss whether a lower dose or a different approach makes sense.
- Build habits first: protein-forward meals, regular movement, and sleep routines are easier to practice while you have support.
- Schedule check-ins: regular weigh-ins and follow-up visits can catch regain early.
- Review alternatives: other medication options may be a better fit if cost or side effects are the issue.
At TeleSlimClinicHouston.com, follow-ups are held by secure video, and our medications page lists the options available. Compounded drugs are not part of our program.
