Before you book a virtual weight-loss visit, it helps to know how licensure, privacy, and safety work. Here is what to look for in a telehealth provider.
Telehealth is now a routine way to receive medical care, including obesity medicine. Safe, high-quality virtual care depends on the provider, so it pays to know what to look for.
1. Licensed, board-certified clinicians
Your provider should be licensed in Texas, where you are located during the visit. You can verify a license with the Texas Medical Board. Ask about board certification in obesity medicine.
2. A real medical evaluation
A safe program reviews your history, medications, allergies, and risks before prescribing, and follows up afterward. Be cautious of any service that promises a prescription without a proper review.
3. FDA-approved medications
Ask which drugs are prescribed. FDA-approved options for weight management include Wegovy, Zepbound, and Saxenda. The FDA has warned about risks from some compounded and unapproved versions. Compounded drugs are not part of our program. See the Wegovy label for reference.
4. Privacy and HIPAA
Health information handled by healthcare providers is protected by HIPAA. Look for a clear privacy policy, secure video, and a platform designed for protected health information. The HHS HIPAA site explains your rights.
5. Clear pricing
Ask what the visit costs and what is not included. Our visit fee is cash-pay, and medication costs depend on your plan and pharmacy.
6. A plan for emergencies and follow-up
You should know how to reach your provider with questions, and to seek in-person care for urgent symptoms.
